Creative relief for first responders and defence children

Defence kids art therapy workshop

The power of a blank canvas is making an impact through two innovative art programs designed to help emergency service personnel and defence children unlock their thoughts and emotions through art.

The pilot programs are designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment where participants can explore their creativity to support their wellbeing.

Made possible thanks to the support of defence engineering firm Babcock Australasia, these programs are delivered in collaboration with MESHA and The Hospital Research Foundation Group – Creative Health.

Building on the success of the Veterans’ Art Program led by art tutor Kaz Pederson, the Babcock Emergency Services Art Group Pilot Program is specifically for first responders, filling a gap in art-based support for them.

The program runs for two four-week blocks and explores using art as a tool for self-expression and relaxation.

“Most participants have no background in art but were interested to find an alternative to physical activity,” Kaz explained.

“Through the art process, they found a way to be more present and more focused.”

The program is already having a profound impact, with one participant saying: “I think the program has a lot to give and support people who have high stress jobs.”

Meanwhile, the Babcock Defence Kids’ Art Workshop at Adelaide’s Catherine McAuley School aims to support wellbeing for defence children.

The workshop offers the children a chance to express their feelings and emotions with the guidance of experienced art psychotherapist Karin Foxwell.

“Defence personnel play an integral role in keeping our country safe. With that service often comes sacrifice, and it’s not just individual service men and women who are impacted, it is their families too,” Babcock’s Executive Director Sue Whitford said.

“Babcock is immensely proud to be supporting MESHA’s kids’ art program, which gives defence children an opportunity to express thoughts and feelings in a safe environment.”
